All other AT&T plans are fraught with issues not faced by fiber, from slower download speeds to data caps. My house is just past a 100+ house neighborhood. About 350 ft. The entire neighborhood has fiber and the line continues past my house for about mile before stopping. The closest house officially on my road and not in the neighborhood that has fiber is just on the other side of the entrance from me at 500 ft distance.Fiber is the technology used to deliver the service, the speed can vary. Gigabit is about the highest you can get at the consumer level today but you can also just get 100 or 300 or whatever the isp will sell you if you don’t need the extra speed. You still get the advantages of fiber, a more reliable and stable, usually symmetrical connection. It would make sense for them put fiber in my area. I’m like 100 yards from an airport, like 100 yards from an interstate, and right in the middle of an entertainment district in my area. All those are good reasons for commercial fiber. But don't mean much in terms of whether residential fiber would make sense there..
